Three of us analyzed different image recognition software. We realized that the technology is possible to implement in our project. We figured that the image recognition would recognize the buildings you're pointing your camera at. Image recognition combined with gps/gyro tracking would definitely be able to track the buildings users might want information about. We also looked a bit at VR/AR, which we might be able to implement.
We also looked at tourist/guide apps to see to pros and cons about different interfaces and guides. We have drawn a lot of inspiration from these.

State of the art analysis
We in the group have after our first interview session narrowed our potential application down. We have realised that when you are traveling with the boat you don't get any information about the buildings in near the water. After discussing different approaches about how we could display that information in a non intrusive way we found that it might be best to use some sort of augmented reality. After research we can find applications similar to ours such as the Flightradar24 app for mobiles. Where you can point your mobile phone up to the sky to see nearby aircrafts. We could use a similar method to give boat travelers information about surrounding buildings.
By using the gps, compass and the gyroscope we should be able to figuring out where the user are and what the phone is pointed at. And then by using the camera we could have an overlaying interface showing different points of interest. And might be able to further improve our detection with different kinds of image recognition technology.
The different points of interest can be mapped to specific coordinates and we could also calculate how long from the poi we are.
We have also discussed displaying different kinds of boatrealted information such as current speed and water temperature. The current speed we could be able to calculate from the data given to us by the gps and compass and the water temperature we might be able to get from stockholm vatten but i'm not sure. When trying to search for temperature Saltsjön the result shows 5 degrees celsius but i'm not sure that is the actual temperature of the water.
State of the art analysis
In our last meeting we summed up the interviews. There were not many complaints about the trip and that the passengers really seemed to like the view. So we figured we would incorporate the view into the project somehow and that it would be a good first user requirement, i.e still being able to enjoy the view while using our product. We also came up with a project idea for an application. The idea is that you point your phone camera towards a building/monument/landmark and the application will bring up information about the thing you're pointing at. I will focus my state of the art analysis on how other tourist/guide-applications present their information.
I searched for "Stockholm travel guide" in the iOS AppStore I then picked the top results and analyzed these.
The one I liked the most was Triposo:

It had easy to navigate menus, a crisp and clean design and gave a lot of useful information, for example ticket prices, open hours, and a link to the locations URL. It was also possible see where the location was located on a map (which you could open in google maps). The app also suggested several walking routes and other activities in Stockholm.
Another app was Travel in Stockholm:
This app was cluttered with adds, weird menus and design. It also contained typos in the information. However, it did include a search function as well as the possibility to change text size (good for people with bad eye-sight).

The last app I looked at was named Stockholm:
This was basically a list that presented information of popular sights and tourism locations. The thing I liked about this app was that it was very clean, it was very clear what it provided. No cluttering with strange buttons or features.

This gave me insight on good information and features in tourist/guide applications. I will discuss this further with the group.

State of the Art - Viscovery
Even though we are still deciding on what exactly we want to do, right now we're aiming for an application that will give you information on the buildings and environments you pass by while riding the boat. There are different ways to achieve this, but one is image recognition.
I have been looking at the company Viscovery, who's technology brings results with very high accuracy and can be used in many different situations. According to their homepage, they are Asia's leading visual search brand. Right now they seem to be working mostly towards other companies with marketing and getting sales up, for example using online television to give real-time information about the items appearing on the screen, their prices and where to get them. Viscovery have also worked with a popular convenience store to produce interactive ads that also use image recognition to give information about the products advertised. The technology can also be used in art exhibitions, to give information about the piece and artist, and to, as they phrase it themselves, "break down the boundaries between online and offline shopping" by giving you information about and comparing prices between products as you are in the store.
Even though Viscovery does not seem to have any plans on working on the kind of project we are interested in, the technique seems very useful for what we want to achieve. I also think the ways they utilize it are very interesting and inspiring.
Sadly their homepage is partly in Chinese and I can't seem to find any specific information about the technology they use. Nevertheless, they have broadened my perspective of how image recognition could be used and given me a clearer picture of how ot could be useful to us.

State of the Art Analysis - Image Recognition APIs, CamFind
State of the Art Analysis - Image Recognition
Based on the data gathered from our interviews we came to the conclusion that most people did not have any actual complaints concerning the boat trip. Most people thought the trip was "nice", fast and smooth overall.
We could not really find a specific issue or request for improvement regarding the boat itself. Therefore we came up with an idea to enhance the boat experience with an application, which would use technology such as GPS and image recognition to give the user information about the different sites sited from the boat during its trip.
My state of the art analysis will focus on image recognition application programming interfaces (APIs), but mainly on the application CamFind, as seen on Youtube.
A quick search using the key word "mobile image recognition" resulted in several different applications available on the market, both live applications and software, most notably APIs. They were, however, not easily accessible as they required registrations, sign ups and licenses. I found this mashape blog listing a couple of image recognition APIs. The first one one the list, CamFind, is available on the App Store and Google Play. CamFind is a visual search engine. It uses pictures taken directly by the user's mobile device to display information about the object among several other features. The following quote is taken directly from their website:
With CamFind, understanding the world around you has never been easier. Simply take a picture of any object and CamFind uses mobile visual search technology to tell you what it is. The CamFind app provides fast, accurate results with no typing necessary. Snap a picture, learn more. That’s it.This image recognition API could potentially prove very useful for our own project. We would just have to tweak it to make it suitable for the boat environment and then focus solely on that surrounding area for maximum usablitity.. This clearly shows that our idea in some way is doable with present technology.
It's all powered by our CloudSight image recognition API, so the same technology can be included in your next big idea.
State of the Art - Catchoom
State of the Art Analysis
Since the interviews did not frame a specific problem with the boat trip, we decided to try to instead enhance the experience of the boat trip.
From the gathered data we came to the conclusion that an application that gives information about stockholm while you ride the boat would be a great way to enhance the boat experience.
The idea of the application is that users should be able to find information about buildings and spots only by pointing their cameras at them. To create this sort of application we would need the use of some sort of image recognition software. One such software is made by the company called Catchoom Technologie who made a augmented reality SDK and an API called "RESTfull API". These softwares enables developers to include image recognition to applications without having to develop their own recognition software.
An application that makes use of Catchooms software that goes by the name of CraftAR uses the image recognition technology to e.g. link users to a site where users can buy whatever product they are pointing their camera on. In short; it works like a qr code but with real object instead of qr codes. The video attached to the applications information page shows how the app also can be used in games as a "unlocker" of sorts where users can unlock new things in the game by finding the right objects in real life.
This application is mainly directed at both casual users and companies. The companies can register their products and e.g. link other users to the webpage of the product. And users can more easily find information about the things they want.
This type of technology would greatly benefit us in our project. By linking different buildings and areas to information pages and/or pictures just like CraftAR, we can achieve a high fidelity application that would enable users to find more relevant information in less time. This also indicates that our idea is doable and that we can create an application by using this technology.

State of the Art - PocketGuide
We are at this point not completely certain of what product we will develop. But our current idea is an smartphone application that works as a tour guide for when the user is on the boat. This app will show information about a specifik landmark, area or building when pointed at with the smartphone camera.
I have chosen to analys a very similar app called PockedGuide. This app works as a personal guide when you are sightseeing. If available in the city you want to visit, it will play a voice recording about the different sights around you. By using the built-in GPS it will know where you are and present information depending on your location.
At this moment it’s hard to find a lot of information about this app. When you enter their website you'll see a commercial video showing very simplistically how the app works. But unfortunately the website lacks a lot of textual information. I did download the app and my first impression is very positive. The app looks good and is very easy to navigate. It will immediately show the city you are closest to. So in my case it shows Stockholm. This is very good for us as this app could be a very good template for our product. Each available tour will start automatically when you are at the start location. I haven’t been able to observe it live not being in Stockholm at this moment, but the tour can be triggered anyway. I chose the tour called ”Stockholm in a Nutshell” that starts in Norrmalmstorg and ends in Södermalm. When you start the tour you can hear a voice-over of the information presented on your screen. One very smart feature that I noticed was how the app will let you know where to look at, like a compass, making it easier to spot what the tour guide is mentioning. This feature is very relevant to us as our app will also need to ”know” were the camera is pointing at.
I would say that this app is aimed at tourists all over the world. The people who uses this are probably people that travel alone as you could become quite isolated walking around with headphones. But that doesn’t have to be the case. The app can be used at certain points just to view information. Another great feature is that the entire tour including the path on the map can be downloaded and stored locally, which is great because the user would not be forced to be online as this could be quite expensive when you are abroad.
Under the tab ”Contribute” on the website it is apparent that the creators of this app didn’t ad all the information themselves. They accept tours from different people all over the world and later add them to the app. I hope this information can be useful for our project.

Summary of the interviews.
Project group meeting 17/3
In the meeting we summed up all the interviews and came up with a project idea.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We interviewed nine persons between 20-60 using semi-structured interviews. Out of the nine people three were tourists. Two worked at Djurgården and one person lived there, the rest were there sightseeing and visiting different locations.
The main reason people traveled by boat was that it's the fastest commute between Slussen and Djurgården. Most of the people also said they enjoyed the scenery, which also seemed like a big incentive. One person didn't like the trip at all, she thought it was crammed and that people were lunatics.
Most people already knew about the boat trip, and didn't use an app or other service to plan their trip, they simply went to the harbor and took the first boat available. However, some people said that if they had to plan a trip, they would use an app or SL's homepage. One of the tourists got recommended by her friend, and the other tourist found the boat by chance.
The interviewees had almost nothing to complain about, except their comfort aboard. One interviewee said she easily got seasick, two people complained about the benches, some other interviewees said it was cold. The things people wanted also, people wanted music, coffee and a bar.
Based on the thought that most of the people complimented the scenery we have come up with an idea for the project. We figured that if someone would use their phone camera and point it towards a building/landmark they would get information about that specific building. In that way, people can still enjoy the view but also get information and possibly directions to the building/landmarks. We will discuss this idea further.

Reading seminar #1
(I used an old edition of the book)
Chapter 7 - Identifying needs and establishing requirements:
Chapter 7 is about the requirements needed from the potential users, how to identify these requirements from users by analysing gathered data, and why we need this information when designing a product. There are two main different requirement types identified for designing software: non-functional requirements, and functional requirements.
Functional requirements is requirements about the functions in the software, for example being able to change the font in a word processor. Non-functional requirements is requirements that's not about functions in software, but rather things such as operating system compatibilities.
The chapter also discusses different methods used in the iterative data gathering processes.
Some examples of the different discussed gathering methods are: focus groups/workshops,
interviews, observation, studying documentation, and questionnaires. The different methods has pros and cons and needs to be picked depending on the situation.
Chapter 12 - Observing users:
This chapter is about observation, or rather how, what, and when to observe.
One discussed subject is goals, questions and paradigms.
You need to know the main goal of the observation in order to get good data out of it. For example, when gathering data you don't always have obvious goals, the observation may be to find the goals for your projects next step, or finding a target group.
Indirect observation is when observing results from an activity after the activity has been conducted.
When you need deeper understanding about the way users conduct an activity, you could use think aloud observation, the user then say every thoughts behind different processes without the need to ask about each and every process.
Chapter 13 - Asking users and experts:
Chapter 13 discusses different interviewing techniques and how to prepare interviews.
There are multiple kinds of interviews: unstructured, structured, semi-structured, and group interviews. Each type has different uses depending on situation.
For example, a structured interview has pre specified questions or "closed questions" using an interview script.
A structured interview is often used when you already have set goals about the interview in mind.
Unstructured is when you come up with questions while undergoing the interview,
the questions are then called "open questions".
Semi-structured is somewhere between an unstructured and structured interview.
When conducting an interview, you want as little dissonance as possible, that is, as little "leading" on with your questions as possible so that you don't interfere with the answers. You can avoid this by not asking questions that has "expected" answers.

Interview #1
I interviewed a man, probably in his late 20's, on the way from Djurgården towards Slussen on a monday afternoon. There were only a few people on the boat at this time.
I = interviewier
R = respondent
I: Okej.
I: Hur ofta åker du båten?
I: Okej.
I: Okej.
I: Okej, that’s it, dåså. Tack så mycket!

Interview 1
Day: Tuesday 8/3-2016
I interviewed a man in his mid 20s in the queue for the boat towards Slussen.
Q: Bor du i Stockholm.
A: Eftersom bussen går närmare mitt hem än vad båten gör.
A: Inte direkt, men kanske lite musik där inne.

I: Hur planerade du din resa idag?

Interviewer: I
Respondent: R
Day: Monday 7/3-2016
Time of the interview: Some time between 13:00 and 14:00
I interviewed a seemingly happy woman in her 40s at Allmäna Gränd while waiting for the boat. It was cold and cloudy outside. The only person waiting for the boat was the respondent.
I realized when transcribing the interview that I kind of directed the interview while asking if there was anything she could think of that would make the boat trip better. I also tried to be as casual as possible as not to seem to formal and create tension. While looking at the end of the interview I also realized that it might have been a pretty abrupt end to the interview, next time I'll try to "fade it out".
I: Kommer du ifrån
Stockholm?
I: Ja precis, frågan
var mer om du faktiskt bor här
R: Ja okej, ja det gör
jag!
I: Okej! Nästa fråga:
Vad har du gjort på djurgården?
R: Jag jobbar här
I: Okej, pendlar du
med båten?
R: Nej, jag brukar
faktiskt cykla,
I: Okej, så är det
här nytt för dig? Att åka med båten alltså.
R: Mm det är det!
I: Så är det första
gången du åker med den här båten?
R: Nej, men det var
flera år sen jag åkte med djurgårdsfärjan.
I: Okej, hur kommer det
sig att du åker just idag då?
R: Jag tänker faktiskt
åka upp till min frisör på söder!
I: Okej, så du bor
inte åt det hållet alltså?
R: Neej
I: Just det!
I: Fint, tack, hej!
Interviews
Interview
made by the ferry entrance at Allmänna Gränd, Djurgården, Sunday the 6:th of
March, 12:07 am. The respondent is a man
around 35 years old, who is travelling alone.
I = interviewer
R= respondent
I: Bor du i Stockholm?
R: Mm - mm.
I: Vad har du gjort på Djurgården?
R: Jag bor här.
I: Ja, okej.
I: Ja.
I: Hur planerade du din resa idag?
R: Inte alls.
I: Okej, haha, vad synd.
R: Ja, tack,
tack.
Interview

March, 12:26 am. The respondent is a
woman around 30 years old, who is travelling with a child.
I: Bor du i Stockholm?
R: Ja.
I: Vad har du gjort på Djurgården?
R: Jag har varit på Aquaria.
I: Åkte du båten hit?
R: Ja.
I: Varför valde du att åka båten idag?
R: För att min systerdotter ville åka båt.
I: Ja, okej. Hur ofta åker du?
R: Väldigt sällan.
I: Tar du ibland någon annan resväg hit?
R: Eh... buss, eller spårvagnen.
I: Varför det?
R: För att det är så man tar sig hit. (laughs)
I: Hur planerade du din resa idag?
R: Ingenting, faktiskt! (laughs)

I: Bor du i Stockholm?
R: Nej.
I: Var bor du?
I: Hur planerade du din resa idag då?
R: Ja men precis.
I: Så ni gick bara?
I: Har du åkt… Har du varit här förut?
R2: Nej.
Male student from Paris probably in his twenties. The interview lasted for 2 minutes and 38 seconds.
R: Ja.
I: Men du kan prata svenska - varför?
R: Jag pluggar svensk litteratur hehe, bland annat så ja,
hehe.
I: Vad har du gjort på Djurgården?
R: På va?
I: Ja det här är Djurgården. Vad har du gjort här?
R: Ja, jag var bara… Vandrat.
I: Okej, kollat runt lite bara?
R: Ja, bara…
I: Har du åkt båten förut?
R: Ja.
I: Varför brukar du åka båten då?
R: No, öh, nej.
I: Du har varit här förut?
R: Ja.
I: Hur tog du dig hit då?
R: Med båten alltså…
I: Du åkte båten också?
R: Ja.
I: Okej.
R: Ja.
I: Buss och spårvagn…
R: Ja.
I: Men varför valde du då bort...
R: Ja alltså, som sagt…
I: Det är trevligare?
R: Ja.
I: Okej.
R: Hahaha…J
Hejdå!
Intervju 1
I = Intervjuare
IP = Intervjuperson
On the boat, towards Slussen, from Allmänna gränd.
I: So where are you from?
IP: Italy.
I: Italy, ok.
IP: Yes.
I: And you live in Italy?
IP: Yeah.
I: Ok. What are you doing here in Stockholm?
IP: I’m visiting Stockholm.
I: Ok.
IP: Yeah. I’m here on holiday.
I: Great. So what did you do in Djurgården?
IP: Ehh, I went to the Vasa museum.
I: Ok.
IP: Yeah. And that’s all. (chuckles)
I: That’s all, ok. And when you got there did you also take the boat?
IP: Ehh, yeah, yeah.
I: Ok. Allright.
IP: I took it from… (doubting) Gamla Stan.
I: Hmm, exactly, alright. Is this the first time you travel with this boat?
IP: No, it is the second time. The first time I went to see… (pause) eeh, Nordiska museum and Skansen.
I: Skansen. Alright. When you planned this boat trip, how did you find out about it?
IP: My cousin lives here, so she told me about this trip.
I: Ok, she knew about it.
IP: Yeah, yeah.
I: Did you write it down or did you use an app to reassure that you didn’t go onboard a wrong boat?
IP: (looks doubtful)
I: You knew which boat it was, right?
IP: Eeh, yeah, she knew.
I: She told you. Alright.
IP: Yeah. (chuckles)
I: What’s the best think about, for example, this boat trip? What do you like about it?
IP: Ehm, the… the city view.
I: The view, alright.
IP: And… it took like fifteen minutes to arrive to the other side.
I: So it’s fast as well.
IP: Yeah, it’s fast as well.
I: And nice?
IP: Yeah, yeah.
I: And the worst thing? Do find anything that’s pretty bad? The least best thing? (chuckles)
IP: I don’t know, maybe the weather but… (laughter). When you are out and the wind comes…
I: It’s cold, when you wait?
IP: Yeah, but it’s the only bad thing that I found here.
I: So there is nothing… Do you know anything that could improve this boat trip? Anything you miss that would be better if we had it here?
IP: Eeh… Every bench could have a cushion.
I: Hmm, ok, a little bit softer?
IP: Yeah.
I: Do you have this kind of transport in Italy?
IP: Ehm, only in Venice and Genova (Genua) , because I live in Milan so there are no…
I: Rivers?
IP: Yeah.
I: Ok. That’s pretty much it. Thank you very much.
IP: You’re welcome.
